Daily Roundup- Wednesday, February 18th

If there was one thing to take from Tuesday’s Alex Rodriguez Press conference, its that nobody believes a single word this guy says.

Mike Lupica says that this version of the truth for Alex Rodriguez still doesn’t sound right.
Mike Vaccaro of the Post’s article title says it all: he must think we’re all fools.
Once again, we can turn to Newsday’s reporters, this time Jim Baumbach, to put a satirical spin on ole A-Fraud.

Now that we got the three major dailies take on it, let me give you mine. I don’t believe A-Rod. I think he wants us to leave him alone now that he has said that he has used steroids. Granted, I do agree that he has said more than any other superstar that was caught but still, there’s still a lot he’s hiding that he does not want everyone to know. Its also very obvious to everyone that he’s playing everyone for a fool which of course makes people mad.
If we’re supposed to believe that he was young and stupid from 26-28, then I still have three more years to make some stupid choices. It took him twenty eight years to grow up? Is that what he wants us to believe?
What about allowing someone, even if it is your cousin, to inject you with a foreign substance that he got from Dominican Republic twice a month for two years and NEVER ask anyone questions? Its ridiculous and kind of insulting that he continues to give us the run around about this when its clear that he doesn’t want to answer questions.
If Alex Rodriguez has a career year and wins the world series and MVP then, I would be convinced that this was the greatest year anyone has ever produced considering the pressure he’s going to be under. But if we know anything about our boy, it won’t be and he’s going to wilt.

With the trade deadline approaching, we revisit one of the most talked about trades last year that affected two franchises: the Jason Kidd trade. David Moore writes in the Dallas Morning News writes that the only way to judge the trade is by what it was intended for: a trip to the NBA Finals.

Jason Kidd is an expiring contract and as we’ve seen from the Suns, there are teams looking merely to get rid of contracts as opposed to holding on to bad ones. The economy is not helping things at all. Consider that Jason Kidd’s contract was weighing heavily on the Nets and while he was still a serviceable point guard, in a Western conference littered with quick point guards who can beat Kidd off the dribble, and also consider Kidd stopped playing defense a while ago, you don’t give up on a young point guard. Finally, if a trip to the Finals was what you were looking for in your point guard, didn’t Devin Harris take you there in 2006? Yes he did.
The opinion of Devin Harris not being a good player was made by a coach that the players had already tuned out. Now thanks to Avery, they have an aging point guard with an expiring contract and they lost not just a young point guard who is showing that he has an offensive game, but two first round draft picks. If you are the Nets, and that offer is made to you, how quickly do you say yes without you being sure that it doesn’t sound like you are totally pulling the wool over on the other guy? Its like the Nets made this deal to the Mavs after the two GM’s had pulled an all night hold em game and had more than a few soda pops in them and the Nets sobered up as quickly as possible to make sure that this happened. Its one of those Vegas Marriage type deals that you are too drunk to remember.
When the Mavs get bounced out of the first round, think of that as the morning after, and add on the contractual equivalent of a hangover. Oh and did I mention that this is two point guards they let go right before they hit their prime even though there was evidence that they would only get better after they left?

Meet the new Texas Rangers phenom, Elvis Andrus. If he’s anything like what Ranger fans hope or this article by Jim Reeves of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reports, the Ranger fans can rest easy that this team is in good shape for the future.

You had to expect the Elvis line in the beginning. I bet it’s a hoot down in Texas. But the fact is, the Rangers have a lot of talent coming down the pike and their first big call up is Elvis Andrus, the guy they made Michael Young move to third for which was really surprising. He’s never played beyond Double A but the Rangers are convinced that this guy deserves the immediate call up which can only mean super man or super bust. We know that offensively it shouldn’t be a problem. Baseball stadium in Arlington is a bandbox and the AL Equivalent of Coors Field where baseballs go to fly. It’s the defense that has most people worried

John Gonzalez reminds us why Sir Charles has been missed over the last few weeks from TNT.

I agree that its not his incredible insight that I look forward to every night. Its his incredible way to get people talking and laughing. He puts people down and is the constant butt of everyone’s jokes and he has a great sense of humor to put up with it considering that he has much more celebrity than Kenny Smith, Kenny Albert or Kenny Anderson. The guy has made TNT the best NBA pre game, halftime, and post game show to watch on the NBA since the NBA on NBC days. But shouldn’t his skills be put to use more on a panel show like the View for men? Maybe that could work? Oh wait, Dick Clark tried that. Sorry Dick.
