More and more Super Bowl coverage. USA Today’s columnist Larry Weisman wonders a question that has been burning up talk radio recently; Is Kurt Warner a hall of famer? Charley Casserly ponders it and says something very interesting "He deserves consideration for taking two teams to the Super Bowl. And at times in his career he has been an elite quarterback in this league."
Frankly speaking, this is a tough question. The guy was the best for three years and then went through the usual cycle of injuries which basically put him in the back up carousel, landing him even in NY to warm the seat for Eli Manning. But when he has played well, he’s played at an elite level.
The one thing that you should also remember and I don’t know if you want to hold it against him, is that he has been surrounded by some exceptional talent. First in St Louis with the greatest show in turf and now in Arizona with the trio of talented receivers here in Arizona. Like Charley Casserly said, who knows what it really takes to be a Hall of Famer but I suppose it would be an easier call if Kurt Warner’s Cardinals won the thing Sunday. Taking two teams to the Super Bowl and at this age, has to be a clincher. So Kurt is playing for more than just a championship this Sunday, he just might be playing for football immortality.
People forget sometimes that this is the Arizona Cardinals franchise in the Super Bowl and before Larry Fitzgerald or Kurt Warner became the face of the franchise, there was Pat Tillman. Before Sunday’s game, I’m sure you’ll hear something about Tillman’s sacrifice and what a great patriot he was for this country. There’s one friend, Zack Walz, a former teammate that carries around memories but is missing an important link to a friend’s past. L.A. Times Bill Plaschke reports.
Its been a while since we’ve even heard his name but with the pre game coverage of the Super Bowl being 8 hours, I’m sure somewhere between that time, they will mention Pat Tillman’s name more often than not. He’s a name that isn’t forgotten in that community and what makes it sadder is that he’s a guy like Adrian Wilson who was here when the team was a horrible team and didn’t get to see it to today’s high.
Yesterday, TJ Simers of the L.A. Times calls Jeff Kent a fraud for his fake tears at his press conference and compares it to the lack of coverage for a beloved colleague at the paper Steve Dilbeck.
I have a soft spot for former Mets but its hard to like an A-whole like Jeff Kent was. Perhaps his aloofness and loner kind of attitude created this image in people’s heads that he was this bad person. No one is crying today because Jeff Kent is gone, even though he was the best offensive second baseman in Major League baseball history. But the fact is, Jeff Kent’s reputation made him this unlovable person that like Simers wrote don’t let the door hit you on the way out. What goes around comes around Kent.
Going back to the NFL and the Hall of Fame discussion, NY Times columnist K.C. Joyner decided to make a case for Ray Guy, All World punter for the Hall of Fame and the numbers make sense.
The honest truth is that I’ve always heard many people saying this guy deserved to be in the Hall of Fame but never really researched this. Thanks to K.C. Joyner, I now see why this guy deserved to be there. As we saw in the Chargers/Colts game, a punter CAN win you games.
If you ever wondered in your life about Stephon Marbury’s brother, Zach Marbury, well David Waldstein read your mind and delivers.
This may sound really naïve but Zach looks exactly like his brother. But seriously, here’s a guy who is doing whatever he can to get noticed in the NBA in contrast to his brother who sits and collects a very good paycheck so he can leave and go somewhere else.
Jean Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News writes that perhaps what the Cowboys need is a leader like Michael Irvin. The same Michael Irvin who thought of this.
First of all, do I say his name is Jean Jacques or just Jean? Ok, back to the story. I agree with him that the Cowboys lack a true leader and the Cowboys are determined to see the same melodrama unfold another season because Wade Phillips should NOT be coaching this team. But again, it wouldn’t be the same in Big D if the D didn’t stand for drama. Frankly I’m not really surprised by anything the Cowboys do anymore and its not surprising that Michael Irvin is doing this reality show JUST so he can get more press.
Now, on to more disturbing news. The story of a 100-0 game in which the coach feels no remorse for spurring on his players to continue shooting 3’s against a team they were beating 59-0 at halftime.
Frankly, I do feel bad for an academy that has only 20 girls in its entire school. But I feel even worse that a coach who doesn’t understand that this is not the big time and at this stage of player’s development, they are not only teaching them the basic fundamentals, but teaching them those sports ideals like sportsmanship. This guy clearly doesn’t get it.
